- [Seedling and Seed Giveaway Saturday May 17th 2025](https://abbotsintransition.org/seedling-and-seed-giveaway-saturday-may-17th-2025/): Our annual Seedling and Seed Giveaway this year is on Saturday May 17th from 10:30am – 1pm, in the Millennium Gardens, Abbots Langley. If you have any spare seedlings or seeds then bring them along for others. If you need any seedlings or seeds then come along to see what we have. This is a cash-free event !
- [Propagation workshop, Serge Hill, Wednesday 21st May](https://abbotsintransition.org/propagation-workshop-serge-hill-wednesday-21st-may/): After the success of our Autumn propagation workshop at Serge Hill last year, we are holding another event, this time to propagate summer plants. It will again be at Serge Hill, on Wednesday 21st May. Come along, look round the amazing plant library and be guided by staff from Sunnyside Rural Trust on how to propagate summer plants. Refreshments are available. Two times available, either 10:30am – 12:30 pm or 1pm – 3pm.
- [Ban Glyphosate and encourage bio-diversity instead](https://abbotsintransition.org/ban-glyphosate-and-encourage-bio-diversity-instead/): Abbots in Transition are calling on the local councils to stop using glyphosate (a suspected carcinogen that is used in the weedkiller ‘RoundUp’), and to pursue other measures of weed control that encourage bio-diversity. Examples of alternative methods are:
- [Footpaths and our use of the countryside](https://abbotsintransition.org/footpaths-and-our-use-of-the-countryside/): We have contacted Abbots Langley Parish Council and Herts County Council to make them aware of increased littering, dog excrement and trespassing on landowners land during the Covid-19 pandemic. We suggested a variety of solutions and would like to work with the local authorities to implement these.
- [Influencing local climate change strategy](https://abbotsintransition.org/influencing-local-climate-change-strategy/): Abbots Langley is controlled by three different councils – the Parish Council, Three Rivers District Council and Herts County Council. We aim to provide input to council plans and decisions which deal with environmental and sustainability issues, and to hold the councils accountable for promised actions to reduce carbon emissions. We do this by making asking questions in council meetings and by making contact with councillors and officials responsible for relevant policy areas, Abbots Langley Parish Council is in the process of producing a Neighbourhood Plan and require the community’s thoughts and ideas about issues that are important to them.
- [Film Screenings](https://abbotsintransition.org/__trashed/): Abbots in Transition has organised several film screenings in the Henderson Hub. 25 September 2022 – ‘2040‘ – a film about how life could be in 2040 if we embrace climate change solutions available to us now. 11 October 2019 – ‘In our hands – seeding change – a film about the influence of large corporations on farms in Britain. 3 October 2019 – ‘Tigers’ – how a baby milk powder salesman in Pakistan becomes a whistle-blower and turns his life upside-down. 20 September 2018 – ‘Tomorrow’ – the solutions we need to combat climate change that are already happening.
- [Autumn Fest](https://abbotsintransition.org/autumn-fest/): Abbots in Transition were part of the group that started Abbots Langley AutumnFest back in October 2015 (when it was called AppleFest). This yearly Autumn Festival is held on School Mead, and aims to showcase local food, business and entertainment. Abbots in Transition always has a stall with information about sustainable living.
- [Friends of Kings Langley Station](https://abbotsintransition.org/friends-of-kings-langley-station/): Since Spring 2023 a small group of volunteers have been meeting monthly to add planting to the bank outside of Kings Langley station. The aim of this project is to increase the bio-diversity of plant and insect life at the station and also to make the bank more beautiful and interesting to look at. Initially the bank was mostly grass with some dog daisies and lots of nettles ! We have gradually been removing the grass and adding perennial flowers, herbs and grasses. We were very pleased to see a wider variety of insects in spring/summer 2024. Volunteers are always
- [AIMS](https://abbotsintransition.org/aims/): A very active group called AIMs are associated with Abbots in Transition, working to improve in small ways our village gardens and open spaces and encouraging local people to help. They are seeking volunteers to join them. Please let them know if you are interested. You do not need any particular skills, just a love of Abbots Langley and a desire to help improve our village in small ways. - [Litter Picking](https://abbotsintransition.org/litter-picking/): Abbots In Transition organises regular Saturday morning litter picking events around the village, usually followed by a visit to a cafe.
- [Community Markets](https://abbotsintransition.org/community-markets/): We run community markets in the Henderson Hub in Abbots Langley. Our markets focus on locally produced food and craft items. Please contact us if you would like a stall.
- [Spring Seedling and Seed Giveaways](https://abbotsintransition.org/spring-seedling-and-seed-giveaways/): Since Spring 2020 Abbots in Transition have organised Spring seed and seedling giveaways in the Millennium Gardens in Abbots Langley. These are part of our ‘Get Abbots Growing’ initiative. They are usually held on a Saturday morning in May. All the seeds and seedlings are free. We hope that people who take seeds one year will bring us some seedlings to give-away the next year. Our most recent seed and seedling giveaway was on May 11th 2024. It was a lovely sunny morning and we had lots of seedling donations and gave away lots of seedlings.

- [Resources for Change](https://abbotsintransition.org/resources-for-change/): Food How to feed ourselves without damaging the planet is one of the big questions that humans need to solve urgently. Although large government-scale action is undoubtedly needed, there are clear individual actions that we can take to reduce the impact of our food consumption on the environment. Buying food locally reduces our car mileage and resulting CO2 emissions. These are reduced even further if the food itself is grown locally. Supporting veg box schemes with an environmental remit is better than buying veg at the supermarket. Excess packaging is another big problem in the food industry. Consumers can vote
- [Groups & Community](https://abbotsintransition.org/groups-community/): There are several groups in Abbots Langley that are working towards a more sustainable and resilient community. Some of these were started, and are supported, by Abbots in Transition. There are also a large variety of other local groups which contribute towards the thriving nature of the village, which can be found on the Parish Council web pages. Abbots in Transition is part of the wider Transition Network, and several of our nearby towns and villages are also members and have interesting projects and ideas. - [Actions](https://abbotsintransition.org/actions/): Get Abbots Growing Many of our activities are related to growing local food. Growing food locally has many advantages for the community and for the environment: Caring for our Environment Living Sustainably Abbots in Transition have stalls every year at the summer village carnival and the September Autumn Fest. We provide information for the local community about sustainable living e.g. insulation, renewable energy. We have also organised a Renewables Roadshow showcasing alternative energy providers. We provide information about local sustainable living projects on our social media channels and at in person events.

- [About](https://abbotsintransition.org/about/): What We Do Abbots in Transition was formed in 2010, by Abbots Langley residents, to provide resources and leadership for our community to move towards a sustainable and resilient way of living in the light of the Climate Emergency. We are a member of the UK-wide Transition Network. We recognise that we need to stop burning fossil fuels as a matter of urgency, and that this will require significant adaptations to our current way of life. We believe in a positive future, that is sustainable, comfortable and fulfilling. History Abbots in Transition had its first meeting on the 19th March 2010.
